muslim aid expeands after tsunami banner
2004 – 2005
Within 48 hours of the tsunami, Muslim Aid workers were on the ground to provide relief and assistance in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Somalia.
- Long term programmes for the survivors of the tsunami started, including shelter and housing, livelihood, education and healthcare.
- Sri Lanka and Indonesia country offices are set up to increase Muslim Aid’s capability to implement long-term tsunami rehabilitation programmes.
- Muslim Aid provided emergency relief provided to victims of the Pakistan earthquake, and assisted post earthquake rehabilitation in Iraq with the development of a new healthcare centre in Bam.
- The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated a joint Muslim Aid/ISAR Waqf funded housing project for the victims of the 1999 earthquake.
2006
- Muslim Aid’s Lebanon appeal raised over £700,000 for emergency relief and refugee support for civilians who suffered from the July air strikes
- Bosnia and Cambodia country offices were set up to ensure that programmes were delivered efficiently and resources mobilised effectively.
- Continued tsunami rehabilitation work was also carried out in most of the tsunami affected areas.
- Donating an initial sum of £150,000, Muslim Aid entered into a new agreement with the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) to help prevent and cure child blindness in Bangladesh, Tanzania, Somalia, Sudan, Pakistan, Uganda, Sri Lanka and Gambia.
- Muslim Aid sent emergency relief for tents, water, bedding, medicine and food in response to a local flood in Sudan that affected 17 villages and 4000 acres of agricultural land.
2007
- Muslim Aid and UMCOR (US based united Methodist committee on relief) sign an official partnership agreement to provide emergency aid to disaster, war and conflict ridden communities.
- The tenth Muslim Aid filed office in Cambodia was opened. It is running run orphan care, Qurbani and Microfinance programmes.
- The Asian development bank (ADB) and Muslim Aid began a joint 2.5 million housing programme for tsunami affected areas in Indonesia. So far, 1,233 permanent homes and 5,861 temporary shelters have been constructed.
- The partnership between Global Medic and Muslim Aid was formalised in Canada. Global Medic has since donated medicines, hospital beds, water purification machine and tablets for use in emergency relief operations.
- In Bangladesh, 696,705 water purification tablets and 9 water purification systems were sent to aid survivors of cyclone Sidr which tore through the country in November 2007. Approximately 20,000 families received clothes and blankets and 20,000 received food packs. Two mobile hospitals were set up and provided 30,000 people with basic health care.
- Throughout Ramadan, our donors helped us deliver £404,500 to people in 53 countries and £450,000 worth of Qurbani meat to people across 52 countries.
