Muslim Aid delivers relief to Bangladesh flood survivors

24 September 2008

The deluge of monsoon rains have brought record flooding to the country, in many areas waters have still not subsided and thousands remain homeless. According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), more than two million people have been forced to leave their homes due to the late monsoon floods in 15 of the country’s 64 districts.

Approximately 4,000 families have been helped as part of Muslim Aid’s relief effort. Packs have been distributed, consisting of food items, aqua tabs to purify water and saline solution to help combat diarrhoea. With the nearing of the Eid festival, which will mark the end of Ramadan, gifts of clothing have also been included. The packs also contain vegetable seeds which can help families sustain themselves with nutritious food in the medium term.

However, some of the families have not only lost their homes in the floods but also their land, leaving them with no means to grow food. Further heavy rains have been forecast over the next few days.
