G20 Summit Fails to Deliver Concrete Plans to Help Developing Countries

02 July 2010

Muslim Aid has expressed concern that last week’s G20 summit (26-27 June 2010) failed to spell out concrete plans to help developing countries. As the global recession continues to take its toll on the poor, Muslim Aid believes that more needs to be done by the developed countries to address global poverty, besides focusing on fiscal consolidation and growth of their economies.

The CEO of Muslim Aid, Syed Sharfuddin said: “To come out of this crisis collectively, G20 leaders must help developing nations with such measures as increasing access to financial services and helping small and medium-sized enterprises.”

Muslim Aid Launches Emergency Appeal Following Flash Floods and Landslide Deaths in Bangladesh

25 June 2010

Muslim Aid has launched an emergency appeal to support people affected by flash floods and landslides in Sylhet, Cox's Bazaar and the Bandarban districts of Bangladesh. More than 57 people were killed in a series of rain-triggered landslides on June 15, 2010.

A further 100 people have been injured with thousands of families stranded in their homes. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecast more rains in the region.

Muslim Aid staff and volunteers are working on the ground to provide food, water and shelter to people affected by the landslides and flooding. Our Field Office in Bangladesh has sent a team to the most affected areas, Netrokon and Sunamgonj, in order to assess long-term needs.

A spokesperson for Muslim Aid said: ‘The situation is growing worse by the day. Our priority is to provide clean water, shelter, food and essential items. We appeal to our donors to respond to the affected people in their hour of need.’
