Muslim Aid calls on IMF to write-off Pakistan’s Debts

07 September 2010

Muslim Aid has called for the write-off of the IMF debts for Pakistan. Addressing a meeting of the international NGO’s in Islamabad organised by the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) last week, Muslim Aid representative said: "An IMF debt write-off will allow Pakistan to release as much as $50 billion from its domestic resource base to re-build the infrastructure destroyed by the floods and help the lives of 20 million people affected by the crisis.”

Muslim Aid has also supported the ONE campaign for the IMF to freeze Pakistan’s debts for two years giving it the capacity to use these funds to recover from the devastating floods. Recognising that 60% of the population already live below the poverty line, a Spokesperson for Muslim Aid said: "We welcome this helpful initiative by the ONE campaign. This is a first step toward what should be a long-term debt-relief to provide support to the people of Pakistan.”
