British Prime Minister Praises Muslim Aid and UMCOR Partnership
17 November 2008
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown MP praised the work of Muslim Aid and The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) in his speech at the UN Interfaith Conference at New York, on the 13th of November 2008 which discussed the role of faith based organisations in working together to promote peace and diversity for the common good.
In his speech the Prime Minister stated the following:
“Secondly, the values of different faiths are already expressed in joint projects and
common service. We in Britain have Muslim Aid, collaborating with the United
Methodist Committee on Relief, to respond to the needs of disaster victims in Asia.
British Muslims working with American Christians to support Asian neighbors of all
faith traditions gives us a glimpse of the potential of faith across our world. As we
celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we
should also seek shared values through a shared commitment to human rights and
fundamental freedom.”
The speech by the Prime Minister is a great demonstration of his support and
and commendation of Muslim Aid's work, confirming the natural alliance between
these two great faiths in serving humanity. UMCOR and Muslim Aid have worked
together in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar, and the partnership heralds a new
chapter of global interfaith engagement which will make a true difference towards
combating poverty, hunger, depravation and disease.
The Prime Minister's endorsement will encourage Muslim Aid to further its work with faith based organisations in the future.
