Global Emergency Appeal

Delivering worldwide humanitarian relief and long term support to communities devastated by conflict and natural disaster.

East Africa Drought Appeal

An estimated 10 million people in Djibouti, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Sudan are at risk of starvation. A shortage of food, water and medicines, made worse by persistent drought conditions in the region have forced thousands of people to flee their homes and seek refuge in camps in Mogadishu, as well as on the border of Northern Kenya and Ethiopia.

Muslim Aid launched an emergency appeal on July 5 2011, to provide humanitarian relief to people affected by the severe drought and malnutrition occurring in the countries of eastern Horn of Africa. On July 10, we began distribution of emergency aid at IDP camps in Mogadishu, handing out food packs, water and kitchen utensils to around 1000 people on the first day of distribution. The situation remains critical with millions of people at risk of malnutrition and starvation, with regions of southern Somalia now upgraded by the UN to famine.

On the Egyptian-Libyan border, Muslim Aid worked with partners at the Egyptian Medical Syndicate to provide emergency medical support for hospitals in Libya. A Muslim Aid Needs Assessment team was also dispatched to Ras Jdir on the Tunisian-Libyan border to ascertain what kind of emergency support Muslim Aid could continue to provide.

Bangladesh, India and Nepal
During December 2010 a severe cold wave and dense fog swept through parts of Bangladesh, India and Nepal.  In the north and east of Bangladesh and in northern India, the temperature fell well below the average to 2 degrees, claiming dozens of lives. Every year people living under the poverty line have found it extremely difficult to cope and 2010 was no different. A lack of warm clothes, fuel and food was the biggest challenge being faced by people, as hospitals were inundated with cold weather related admissions.

In the same month further lives were claimed in Tarai, Nepal. An estimated 5,000 street children in Nepal were in need of clothes and blankets to keep them warm. Muslim Aid has helped vulnerable people by providing blankets, winter clothes and other essential winter materials.

Pakistan
The last few years have been particularly turbulent for people in Pakistan. With the most disastrous floods in the history of the country in July 2010, relentless conditions continue to ravage the country. Muslim Aid has started emergency recovery work with the construction of houses in four model villages in flood affected provinces.
Donations are needed to provide health, education and livelihood support in these villages.

Palestine
Years of conflict and ongoing strife mean Palestinian people live in some of the worst conditions on the planet. Muslim Aid continues to work in Palestine and with refugees to provide healthcare, clean water, livelihood opportunities and support to children and their families through the Rainbow Family Child Sponsorship Programme, ensuring support and access to opportunities despite living in difficult conditions.

Somalia
Lack of rainfall and high temperatures during December 2010 left the Puntland region of Somalia with severe drought, as many communities’ livestock, food security and water supplies were threatened. Muslim Aid continues to extend emergency health, water and sanitation projects, restoring hope to communities who were in desperate need of clean, safe drinking water and food.
