Palestine Trauma Centre

Dr Wahba at the Trauma Centre
The Palestine Trauma Centre provides trauma counselling and support for Palestinian children and their families. There has been a sharp increase in the number of trauma cases amongst children since the attack on Gaza in early 2009. With the help of Muslim Aid the centre has helped over a thousand children in overcoming Post Traumatic Stress disorder in the last year. Dr Maha Wahba, a psychologist at the centre was clear about his thoughts on Muslim Aid stating that “…without their help this centre cannot continue to give the psychological support for the affected people in the Gaza Strip.”
The centre’s main work involves helping children overcome Post Traumatic Stress disorder through therapy sessions and group activities. Children at the centre receive gifts after their therapy sessions and are referred for further clinical therapy should they need more help. In addition the centre engages in work with the mothers of affected children. They help them to deal with the trauma that their children are going through and also help them to deal with their own strains and stresses.
The centre continues to train new and existing staff in running its activities. It also trains staff from other local institutions working with venerable children, teaching them ‘psychosocial intervention techniques’. The centre has ensured that children can lead normal lives despite having been exposed to such traumatic experiences.
