Do you remember that 4,000 people were killed and millions left homeless?

Do you remember your astonishing support for our emergency appeal?

Do you remember Cyclone Sidr?

On that tragic afternoon...

Cyclone Sidr slammed the highly vulnerable low lying densely populated coastal areas of Bangladesh-Bagerhat, Barguna, Patuakhali and Patuakhali being the worst affected. Heavy rains and winds of up to 150 miles/hr sent a tidal surge through the regions sweeping up anything in its path. Wooden houses were wiped out and infrastructure and crops were completely destroyed. Few had time to come to terms with their loss as the next battle was for survival, millions were left without food, clean water and medical supplies.

Your extraordinary response...

Muslim Aid immediately allocated £215,000 for emergency aid and then launched a fundraising campaign to raise £3 million for ongoing relief and rehabilitation working in three of the four worst-affected areas (Bagerhat, Patuakhali and Pirojpur) . Your response was phenomenal and we were able to reach over half a million pounds in only two weeks. Not only did it show your commitment to the people of Bangladesh but it demonstrated your faith in Muslim Aid to deliver emergency relief to those who needed it most.

Our emergency relief operation involved 150 field staff and a network of more than 200 volunteers.

During its emergency operations Muslim Aid provided 236,000 families with drinking water (6 litres on an average per family) together with jerry cans and purification tablets, as well as distributing food to more than 30,000 families and non food items to 25,000. More than 35,000 patients received emergency health support and around 1,000 families received cash for work support.

One year on…..

Thanks to your fantastic support we have stayed in Bangladesh to implement long term development projects aimed at rebuilding houses and providing families with the opportunities to get back on their feet to earn a living.
