The Month of Jamada Al Awwal

Meaning of Jumada Al-Awwal: The first month of summer.

The Month of Jamada Al Awwal

The Month of Jamada Al Awwal

Jamada Al-Awwal, the fifth month in the Islamic calendar, refers to the summer months. The word ‘Jamada’ derives from the word ‘Jamad’, which means rainless or dry. Even so, since the Islamic calendar is based on moon sightings, Jamada Al-Awwal will fall in the autumn or winter months this year as opposed to the summer.

This month can be used as a time of reflection on previous months and to think about how to increase worship in the coming months. Good deeds are rewarded at any time, so acts of worship should be done throughout the years, including in Jamada Al-Awwal, and not only in the four sacred months.

When is Jamada Al-Awwal 2023?

Jamada Al-Awwal will begin on 15 November and end on 13 December 2023. However, these dates may change depending on the sighting of the moon.

Important Events That Took Place During Jamada Al-Awwal

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Khadija (RA) got married after Khadija (RA) proposed to the Prophet (PBUH) by sending one of her friends. She was 15 years older than the Prophet (PBUH), but their marriage was a happy one, in which Khadijah (RA) supported her husband through his experiences of prophethood.

The grandfather of the Prophet (PBUH), Abdul Muttalib, passed away during the month of Jamada Al-Awwal. Abdul Muttalib looked after the Prophet while he was between six and eight years old and taught him valuable skills.

Make The Most of Jamada Al-Awwal

Use the month of Jamada Al-Awwal to perform acts of worship to gain the pleasure of Allah (SWT). Try to make more dua, dhikr, pray Sunnah and Nafl prayers, and make up for missed fasts if you have any.

Giving charity at any time is important, as seen in the hadith; Muhammad, upon him, be peace, said: "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased)." (Muslim)

Donate to Muslim Aid this Jamada Al-Awwal to gain rewards for the afterlife and help our brothers and sisters around the world who are in need. Your donation can help to save, change and shape lives. The Prophet, upon him, be peace, said: “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)
