Ramadan is coming, Ramadan is near; one of the most long-awaited months of the Islamic Year. One of the most auspicious and blessed months; a time in which many seek repentance from Allah SWT while the doors of Heaven are open, shaytaan (devil) is locked away, and forgiveness is incessant.
How time flies. It feels like just yesterday we were counting down to Ramadan 2015, and here we are, already nearing Ramadan 2016.
Such is life, passing us by so quickly with the blink of an eye, and here we are again. Did we follow up our repentance and continue our good deeds from last Ramadan? Did we attain and upkeep our taqwa (fear of Allah SWT, an increase in virtue)?
Preparing for Ramadan is not about stocking up our fridges, freezers and cupboards with groceries of all sorts; this is completely missing the point. It is about cleansing and purifying our souls and our senses, and increasing our taqwa.
Remember, it is not only this blessed month we need to discipline ourselves for; it is to apply this discipline to the rest of our lives on this earth so that we may attain Paradise in the next.
We’re so great and organised at planning things in our temporary lives; today, tomorrow, next week, next year… Education, marriage, career, futures, etc.
However, what we should really be doing is planning our hereafter because that is when all those tomorrows will count, that’s where all the time spent planning will pay off.
Let’s set ourselves some goals, with our main focus to attain Jannah in our Hereafter and to be closer to our Creator.
In this world, when we ask for water, the glass comes with it. Ask for the hereafter, and the here will come with it.
Let’s regain focus this Ramadan and utilise it as our ultimate turning point, forever.
