Although earthquakes are not uncommon in Indonesia, occasionally, a larger natural disaster occurs which has the power to devastate the entire archipelago. At Muslim Aid, we recognise the importance of being prepared and supporting those in need whenever disaster strikes. Our Indonesia Disaster Appeal allows us to send vital aid directly to the worst affected areas, saving lives and supporting families and communities in their hour of need.
2018 Earthquake and Tsunami
In September 2018, a deadly earthquake struck Indonesia and was shortly followed by a tsunami which left widespread destruction across the island nation. The people of this diverse, vibrant community were left shattered, with homes, businesses and livelihoods all gone in the blink of an eye.
In addition to the earthquake, waves over 20 feet high battered Indonesia, destroying everything in their path and leaving whole communities hidden under the rubble. Over 2,000 people lost their lives in the disaster, while more than 200,000 are still in need of humanitarian aid and assistance, having lost everything they held dear in the process.
With your generous support, Muslim Aid’s Indonesia Disaster Appeal enables our team to send aid directly to vulnerable people in Palu and Donggala, the worst affected areas, providing a lifeline in a sea of devastation.
Hundreds of thousands of people’s lives have been changed forever – now, the survivors are struggling to access even the most basic human essentials like food, shelter and clean, safe water.
Facing the Facts
It is imperative to act quickly when a disaster strikes in order to reach those in the worst affected areas and save as many lives as possible. Here at Muslim Aid, we are committed to doing everything we can to help these vulnerable people through providing essential supplies and food aid as well as actively working to support those whose lives have been changed forever by the disaster.
When a natural disaster hits, it’s important to remember that every member of the community is affected. Children, the elderly, and entire families have been displaced and made homeless, leaving them susceptible to the elements without proper shelter or support in place.
As well as their homes and belongings, many of these people may have lost friends or family members. In extreme cases, children have been orphaned and families separated, leaving some of the most vulnerable members of society at risk of exploitation. These people need a sense of safety and security, as well as basic life necessities like food, water and shelter, in order to overcome the worst effects of the disaster.
