Muslim Aid is calling for local football lovers to sign up their 7 aside teams for this exciting football tournament to be held on Sunday 29th July at Barnfield West Academy in Luton.

The tournament is being organised as part of the Muslim Aid Flamengo project which aims to ‘Kick a Ball and Change a Life’. This tournament aims to raise £2,000 which could provide 1,000 litres of clean water daily to the people of Gaza via solar powered water desalinisation units.

Lack of clean drinking water is a real threat to the 2 million people who live in Gaza. Sanitation systems are broken or non-existent spreading raw sewage and transferring bacteria and disease.

Abeer Um Khalil and her children are one of the families suffering in this way. She says, “Our life is hard. I have no access to water and if I find water it's undrinkable and salty. My children and I suffer from scabies, diarrhoea, kidney stones and skin rashes. I can’t find water. I can’t afford water.”

In Gaza:

  • 40% of people only have access to water every 3 days
  • 97% of water is unsafe for human consumption
  • less than 1/3 of Gaza’s water plants are regulated or licensed leading to high contamination risks.

Sahir Osman, Sports Project Manager for Muslim Aid, said: “Football is a beautiful game and this project is simple. We are uniting through sports; regardless of  race or religion we are coming together to play  the great game and help people to a healthier and better life.

“We have a few spaces left for more teams to join us to help make the day a real success. We believe this project has an enormous potential to make a real difference to  those families struggling in Gaza.”

The Flamengo project is already getting support from celebrity footballers including Ex Chelsea Star  Demba  Ba, West Ham’s  Michail  Antonio  and  Wolves  Captain  Danny  Batth.

There will be a barbecue, refreshments, trophies and medals for the participating teams. It costs just £130 to register a team. To sign up your team contact Taz on 07523 346 634
