Muslim Aid Warns of Food Crisis in Central African Republic (CAR)

After a recent humanitarian assessment in the Central African Republic, Muslim Aid has come together with Catholic and Muslim aid agencies to warn of a dire food crisis that families are suffering from in the region.

Muslim Aid was part of an interfaith coalition of aid agencies which visited the Central African Republic in April in order to assess the level of the humanitarian crisis as a result of recent inter-communal violence. The coalition of aid agencies, which includes CAFOD, Muslim Aid, Islamic Relief and the Muslim Charities Forum, witnessed an alarming level of destitution and a need for urgent humanitarian relief. The agencies state that 54% (2.5 million people) of the population has been directly affected by the crisis, and over 35% of people are in urgent need of food.

Muslim Aid’s Emergency Programmes Manager, Ute Theobald, said: “We are exploring the steps we can take as faith based INGOs to support those affected in CAR. We would like to work on an interfaith collaboration because we believe that it is very important that Christian and Muslim NGOs work together to promote social cohesion. There is a need for increased funding in order to meet the needs of the people on the ground.”

Muslim Aid will be working alongside the coalition of charities to provide emergency food aid as well as seeds and tools in order to provide a sustainable food supply to the affected communities.
