When does Ramadan Start in 2024?

Ramadan – A Blessed Month

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a time when Muslims come togetherto celebrate the fasting month, which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and an obligation for all Muslims. Ramadan is observed by acts of devotion to Allah (SWT), which include fasting, prayers, recitation of the Quran, charity and dua. It is the honourable month in which the Holy Qur’an was presented to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as guidance for all humanity

The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Qur’an was revealed as guidance for mankindand as clear signs that show the right way and distinguish between right andwrong. So those of you who witness the month must fast in it.”   [Al-Quran 2:185]

Start of Ramadan 2024

Ramadan dates in 2024 are going to be different from previous years. Because of following the lunar calendar, the Ramadan start date changes every year. In 2024, the holy month is expected to start on or near 10 March, depending on moonsighting. Regarding what day Ramadan starts, it is estimated to be Sunday or Monday, subject to the official announcements.

Ramadan Eating Times

Following the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), the believers eat two meals a day, known as Suhoor and Iftar. Suhoor is a pre-dawn meal eaten before beginning the fast, and Iftar is the food eaten to break the fast at sunset. It is highly recommended to eat something for Suhoor and to choose food with good nutritional value for Iftar. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:

Eat suhoor, for in suhoor there is blessing.” [Bukhari,1923]

When does Ramadan 2024 End?

In 2024, the Ramadan end date is expected to be around 9 or 10 April. The end of Ramadan isobserved by the Eid-al-Fitr celebration. Eid al-Fitr 2024 is estimated to start around 10April, with a possible difference of a couple of days due to the differences in moonsighting.

Eid-al-Fitr 2024

The holy month of Ramadan is followed by the joyous occasion of Eid-al-Fitr, a festival that marks the end of Ramadan. It is a day when Muslims rejoice and thank Allah (SWT) for granting them the privilege, the will and strength to complete the fasting month.Traditionally, Muslims gather to perform the congregational Eid Prayers in the morning, donate to charity for those less fortunate and then enjoy a feast with family and friends.

On being asked about pre-Islamic celebrations, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) stipulated the blessed festival of Eid for Muslims: “Verily Allah has replaced them for you with something better than them: the day of (Eid) al-Adha and the day of (Eid) al-Fitr.” [Sahih Sunan Abi Dawood]

The day of Eid also involves an obligatory donation, called Zakat-al-Fitr, which is to be given before the Eid prayer. It is a very small contribution and applies to all Muslims of all ages. For more information on Eid-al-Fitr, click here.
