Allah will split seas for you – remembering Musa (AS) in Muharram

The sacred month of Muharram holds deep spiritual significance in the hearts of Muslims around the world, serving as a reminder of miraculous events that serve as deep spiritual reminders. Among these stories is the one of our beloved Prophet Musa (AS) which stands out as a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of Allah’s intervention.

When Musa was born under the rule of the Faruun (Pharoh), and was at risk of being killed because at that time he divided people into sects and commanded one group to slaughter their sons out of fear of a successor coming from them.

His mother was commanded by Allah to place him in a basket on the river Nile and “do not fear and do not grieve. Indeed, We will return him to you and will make him [one] of the messengers" (Qur’an 7:28).

Indeed, the child who was saved by being taken into the Nile, grew up to have one of the most miraculous prophetic stories and became a bastion of anti-oppression. His people were desperate to escape the clutches of Faruun and he was the gateway to their freedom.

On the Day of Ashura, which is the 10th Muharram, Musa (AS) was given a staff by Allah, and he parted the Red Sea, which allowed them to escape the oppression of Faruun.

Throughout the story of Musa (AS), we witness him demonstrating patience and faith in Allah time and again. From his early years to his encounters with Pharaoh and his trials in the wilderness, Musa demonstrated steadfast patience in the face of adversity. Patience – sabr – is known to be an essential Islamic virtue, to which we saw Musa (AS) stick to in trusting in Allah’s plan.

While the story of Musa primarily revolves around his confrontation with Faruun, there is a connection to the tragic events of Karbala during the month of Muharram. The grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Imam Hussain, and his followers faced a great injustice during the Battle of Karbala. Just as Musa stood against oppression, Imam Hussain displayed unwavering courage and sacrifice to uphold the principles of justice and righteousness. His martyrdom on the 10th of Muharram remains a symbol of resilience and the pursuit of truth, urging Muslims to stand against tyranny and oppression.

As we commemorate the sacred month of Muharram, let us draw inspiration from the life of Musa, absorbing the lessons of sacrifice, survival, and steadfastness in the face of adversity. May this month be a time of spiritual growth, remembrance, and seeking closeness to Allah
