Laylatul Qadr

Laylatul Qadr

Laylatul Qadr

What is Laylatul Qadr?

Laylatul Qadr refers to the Night of Power – the night on which Allah (SWT) revealed the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the Angel Jibraeel.

Laylatul Qadr occurs on one of the last 10 nights of Ramadan, but this day is not known other than the fact that it is an odd night. Some think it falls on the 27th night, but it is important to utilise every night in doing extra good deeds and worship to reap the rewards of this night. In addition to this, Ramadan is a special month in which Muslims should strive to worship Allah (SWT) even more, and any worship or acts of good are rewarded more highly than in the rest of the year.

Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and is a means of observing the Pillar of Islam, Sawm, which means ‘to fast’. Fasting from dawn to sunset during this month teaches Muslims perseverance, faith, humility, and self-control over their desires.

“Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.’ (Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim)”

Ramadan is expected to begin on 10 March 2024, depending on moon sightings.

What Can I Do on Laylatul Qadr?

There are many good deeds you can do during the month of Ramadan and on the Night of Power to reap the rewards:

  • Pray Sunnah and Nafl voluntary prayers.
  • Stay up during the night to engage in worship, like praying Tahajjud.
  • Read more Qur’an than normal – if you read one Juz a day, you can complete the Qur’an within 30 days.
  • Increase dhikr by reciting Subhanallah, Alhamdullillah, and Allahuakbar.
  • Seek forgiveness from Allah (SWT) by saying Astagfirullah.
  • Engage more with your neighbours and community. You can organise community gatherings or Iftaars.
  • Smile – even that is an act of charity.
  • Give charity and donate to those who need it.

Donate to Muslim Aid this Ramadan to invest in your afterlife and help those in need.

Muhammad, upon him, be peace, said: “Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives, Allah adds to his respect; and the one who shows humility, Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).” (Muslim)
