The Month of Safar

Meaning of Safar: Void.

The Month of Safar

Safar

‘Safar’ is the second month in the Islamic calendar and means ‘empty’ or ‘void’, which refers to the time when houses were left empty when people would go out looking for food or be in battle. The word Safar comes from the same root letters as the word travel in Arabic (alsafar).

Many battles occurred during this month, including the battles of Abwaa and Khyber. As a result, Allah (SWT) commanded the Muslims to move to Madina to avoid further battles, which showed Islam to be a religion of peace and brotherhood.

During Safar, Umrah is performed by many Muslims who want a quieter experience. During other months like Dhul Hijjah and Ramadan, it is very busy, so going in Safar helps them focus on worshipping Allah (SWT).

When is Safar 2023?

Safar will begin on 18 August 2023, when the month of Muharram ends.

Events That Occurred During Safar

In Safar, some important events occurred. The Prophet (PBUH) migrated to Madina from Makkah on the 27th night, where he avoided being assassinated by the Quraysh who waited outside his house by reciting, ‘And We have put a barrier before them, and a barrier behind them, and We have covered them up so that they cannot see’. [Qur’an, 36:9]

Moreover, in Safar, the Prophet’s (PBUH) daughter, Fatima (RA) got married to Ali (RA), and Hasan Ibn Ali (RA) attained martyrdom.

Make The Most of Safar

Safar is a good month to reflect on Muharram and to continue the good deeds and habits you started at the start of the Islamic year. Although Safar is not one of the four sacred months, it is also an important month due to the events that occurred during it, and worship during this month with the right intentions is also rewarded.

This Safar, try to help in your community more, or even just check in on friends and family. Fasting during Safar is also virtuous, as it is at any other time, as well as helping neighbours, feeding the poor, and giving charity. The Prophet, upon him, be peace, said: “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)
