Muslim Aid’s #RucksackChallenge video goes viral

A vulnerable and lonely homeless person found joy and comfort when a volunteer from the UK based international charity, Muslim Aid, handed over a bag full of essential items.

Adnan from Manchester uploaded a video of his #RucksackChallenge on Muslim Aid Manchester Facebook page which received over 23,351 views in just less than 24 hours. It got 833 likes and was shared 300 times. The video shows Adnan talking to a homeless man who sleeps rough on the streets of Manchester. He is given a bag full of winter essentials like blanket, jumper, scarf and sleeping bag. In the video Adnan is also seen informing the homeless person about Muslim Aid’s assistance which is readily available to him and others who are in similar situations.

The popularity of this video underlines the issues of homelessness, an economic tragedy, which has forced thousands of people to live under the poverty line and sleep rough on streets in the UK. The number of rough sleepers is mounting yearly across England. In Manchester, around 13,650 became homeless in 2013 due to evictions by landlords. Unemployment and cuts to welfare as well as local authority budgets has made many people homeless. They are particularly vulnerable during winter months as they have little or no resources to keep warm due to poverty.

The cycle of homelessness is not easy to break; however, Muslim Aid has initiated #RuckSackChallenge to assist people who sleep and live rough on the streets. Volunteers all over England are being are inspired to fill and distribute a rucksack with essential items such as gloves, hats, sleeping bag, fleece, socks, books, tooth paste and easy to open tinned food.
