1985 - Where It All Began

Muslim Aid is founded when leading British Muslim Organisations join to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Africa

1985 – Where It All Began

Born from emergency, Muslim Aid was founded in London in November 1985 by 23 leading British Muslim organisations. Yusuf Islam served as the first Chairman, Dr Katme as Secretary and Mueen Uddin Choudhury as Treasurer. The organisation’s aim was to alleviate suffering caused by poverty, war and natural disaster.

In its first year Muslim Aid coordinated a UK-wide fundraising drive, raising £259,000 and distributing emergency relief to thousands affected by the Ethiopian famine, ongoing crises in Palestine and Afghanistan, and widespread flooding in Bangladeshestablishing a legacy of rapid response and community mobilisation.
