Poverty and a lack of much needed healthcare have placed pregnant women and their unborn children in Bangladesh at high risk of disease, disability and even death.
Too many women continue to experience pregnancy and childbirth without medical assistance with many losing their lives to easily preventable causes. Exceptionally high infant and maternal mortality rates mean that the women and children of Bangladesh require urgent medical care.
Without basic healthcare and nutrition, pregnant women in the poorest areas of Bangladesh are at risk of complications, miscarriage or still birth. A lack of maternal care means they often give birth without medical assistance, or even pain relief. For the babies who survive, their lives hang in the balance as their mothers are often too weak to breastfeed. They need immediate medical intervention and nutritional feeds.
Pregnant women, mothers and children need basic primary healthcare urgently. Nutritional feeds, medicine, incubators and fully equipped ambulances are all urgently required to help them survive.
We are working in Bangladesh’s Moulvi Bazar, Pirojpur and Pabna District reaching remote and impoverished communities to deliver life saving and life enhancing support.
