Gifts of Happiness

Fundraiser by Sultana Aktar
62% Completed

This Ramadan share the joy of Eid by giving a gift to one of the hundreds of forgotten children in UK Hospitals.

Muslim Aid is working with Great Ormond Street Hospital, Birmingham Children’s Hospital & Newcastle Hospital Charity to provide gifts to children in 40 different wards which include (Burn Centres, Intensive Care, Neurosurgery and others).

Sultana’s Story:

My name is Sultana, and I am a 28-year-old full time mother to my 3 beautiful boys: Fuzael, Musa and Eesa. My son Musa was diagnosed with cancer in 2014 when he was just 10 months old. He had 5 months of intensive chemotherapy at Great Ormond Street Hospital and was in remission for 34 months. He relapsed in 2017 and had a Bone Marrow Transplant. Alhamdulilah, in terms of the cancer he is doing well but suffers from secondary conditions from the treatment.

The last 6-7 years have been difficult to say the least, but it has also been one of the most eye-opening experience. I spent several months in hospital, often in isolation and learnt just how testing it can be through my experience and speaking to other parents. We are very fortunate to have the NHS, but over the years I felt that the Muslim community could do more to help families who go through these hardships.

During Christmas, Valentine's Day, Halloween and other festivals, the hospital is decorated nicely, gifts are given out in abundance all funded by the goodwill of volunteers. On Eid, it can be quite deflating as there are is no decorations, presents, or festive atmosphere. Just because children are in hospital this shouldn’t mean Eid is ‘cancelled’ for them. That’s why this year I am volunteering with Muslim Aid to bring joy to hundreds of children in Hospitals this Eid.

Gifts we provide:

Whilst the country emerges from restrictions, infection control remains a high priority within the hospitals and therefore we will be providing gifts that can be used by children that can be taken home. This includes crafts and activities that can be supported by the wonderful team of Play Workers. Play is incredibly important within the hospital setting as the team deliver bedside sessions to distract children from difficult and uncomfortable procedures and provide a warm, non-clinical presence that breaks up long hospital days (such as when children are receiving dialysis treatment. The Play team know the most suitable and popular gift which include the below:

  • Chunky colouring pens (good if gripping is difficult)
  • Papier mache kits (are sensory and lots of fun for kids to get messy)
  • Sock kits for older children to make their own monsters and furry friends to be by their bedside
