Give Sadaqah Jariyah and Leave Your Legacy

Charity and faith go hand in hand. In Islam, there are both obligatory and voluntary forms of giving – Zakat is an example of the former, while Sadaqah Jariyah is an example of the latter.

What is Sadaqah Jariyah?

Sadaqah Jariyah, meaning a form of giving that keeps on giving, is extremely beneficial for both the individual giving Sadaqah Jariyah and the recipients of their generosity.

This form of charity is all about doing good in the long-term, encompassing examples like large-scale livelihood projects and ventures that will continue to benefit multiple people for many more years to come.

The meaning of Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah is often used interchangeably, and it’s true that they are both examples of voluntary charity. However, Sadaqah Jariyah is a long-lasting form of giving providing ongoing rewards, whereas Sadaqah is a gift that will only benefit the recipient once.

Sadaqah Jariyah is highly rewarded in Islam. Kind and generous acts of Sadaqah Jariyah will continue to bring great rewards both now and in the Hereafter - as long as people continue to benefit from your good deeds.

Why Do We Give Sadaqah Jariyah?

The Prophet (SAW) narrated:

‘When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (continuing charity), knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him’.

(Muslim)

Generosity is a valuable trait that we should all work to encourage and develop. Not only does giving benefit those around us, but it also benefits us, too. While all forms of giving are highly regarded in the eyes of Allah (SWT), voluntary acts of charity like Sadaqah Jariyah brings great reward.

In a world where privilege and good fortune are little more than a dream for many people, it is more important than ever to consider the significance of giving and how Sadaqah Jariyah can continue to help those in the greatest need.

Examples of Sadaqah Jariyah

There are many examples of Sadaqah Jariyah, each of which brings its own rewards. Here are a few great examples:

Water

Water is one of the most basic fundamentals necessary for life, and, in the Western world, it can be all too easy to take this precious, life-giving commodity for granted. However, countless people around the world do not have access to safe, clean water – a staggering fact in this modern world.

Donating towards the cost of constructing a community water well is a valuable example of Sadaqah Jariyah that will continue to provide essential water to multiple people for many more years to come. A ready supply of water can completely transform an entire community, bringing plentiful reward and blessings to the generous person or people who selflessly contributed towards the construction of the water well.

Orphans

Our children are our future; the next generation hold the world in their hands, and it is our duty to ensure they are as well prepared as possible to achieve their full potential. Due to the devastating effects of conflict, poverty, and natural disasters, countless children around the world are facing a future without their parents and loved ones by their side.

By giving Sadaqah Jariyah to support these vulnerable orphans, you are giving them the opportunity to work towards a brighter future filled with potential. Supporting these orphans now will influence their entire life – and the future of their community – which will continue to bring you great rewards.

Education

Here at Muslim Aid, we firmly believe that every child deserves the right to an education. Learning about the world, alongside studying essential skills like literacy and numeracy, has the potential to set a young mind up for life. Give Sadaqah Jariyah and help us to shape the minds of the next generation, in turn giving them the chance to maximise their potential and live life to the fullest.

Mosques

The Mosque is the centre of the community, a place where Muslims of all ages come together to pray, worship, study, and join in with events. As a result, contributing to the cost of building a new Mosque or updating or maintaining an existing one is also an example of Sadaqah Jariyah.
