Emergency Floods Appeal

Fundraiser by Ansa Khan

Ansa reads Ulysses to raise money for the Pakistan Emergency Floods Appeal

Millions of people have been affected by floods in Pakistan, hundreds have been killed, and the government has declared a national emergency. [Source Pakistan floods: Monsoons bring misery to millions in Pakistan - BBC News]

I have decided to put my only marketable skill (reading just slightly faster than average) to good use: over the month of September, I will be reading James Joyce’s masterpiece Ulysses and you can sponsor me here.

These are difficult times for everyone, so please do only give what you can afford. If you’re not in a position to donate but wish me well in my endeavour, that’s wonderful too.

Muslim Aid through its consortium partner @IslamicReliefPK has distributed Cash Grants and Non-food items in flood affected areas of Balochistan.

What will you get in return?

I will tweet regular updates about how I’m getting on – you can follow my progress here: @ansa_khan

Together we can find out…

Who or what or when is Ulysses?

Why is the book so long?

Is it really difficult to read?

What was Molly Bloom saying yes to?

Once I’ve finished, I’m also happy to offer a limited number of one-on-one sessions to anyone who has donated and would like me to tell them enough about the book that they can pretend to have read it themselves.

What is happening in Pakistan?

‘Deaths from widespread flooding in Pakistan topped 1,000 since mid-June, officials said Sunday, as the country’s climate minister called the deadly monsoon season “a serious climate catastrophe.”

Flash flooding from the heavy rains has washed away villages and crops as soldiers and rescue workers evacuated stranded residents to the safety of relief camps and provided food to thousands of displaced Pakistanis.

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority reported the death toll since the monsoon season began earlier than normal this year — in mid- June — reached 1,033 people after new fatalities were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southern Sindh provinces.

Sherry Rehman, a Pakistani senator and the country’s top climate official, said in a video posted on Twitter that Pakistan is experiencing a “serious climate catastrophe, one of the hardest in the decade.”’ [Source: Pakistan flooding deaths pass 1,000 in 'climate catastrophe' | AP News]

Where will your money go?

All funds raised go to Muslim Aid’s Pakistan Emergency Floods Appeal.

‘Flash floods is devasting much of Pakistan. 60% of the annual rainfall has already fallen within the space of three weeks, submerging homes and damaging infrastructure. The Pakistan authorities have reported that the floods have resulted in:

At least 150,000 people requiring urgent humanitarian assistance.

More than 25,940 houses have been severely or partially damaged.

6,000 bridges have been damaged.

384 deaths.

Thousands have been injured.

The Muslim Aid team in Pakistan have launched an emergency appeal and are on the ground now delivering emergency relief and assistance.’
