Alert: Millions of lives damaged by new wave of Bangladesh floods

Severe flooding has affected millions in Bangladesh, prompting urgent rescue efforts to evacuate communities overwhelmed by floodwaters after torrential rains caused rivers along the northeastern border to rise to dangerous levels.

Approximately 3 million people have been impacted by the floods, which have submerged hundreds of homes, leaving many residents stranded on rooftops, according to the Disaster Management Ministry of Bangladesh.

In recent months, heavy rains and landslides have resulted in hundreds of deaths, millions of displaced, and severely damaged infrastructure across South Asian subcontinent.

While flooding is common during the monsoon season, as of Thursday, Bangladesh’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre reported that water levels in 11 rivers have exceeded the "danger level."

Locals fear a humanitarian catastrophe looming with videos circulating on social media of residents navigating muddy waters in canoes and swimming with their belongings as floodwaters reach the roofs of their homes.

In the particularly affected Feni district of Chattogram in southeast Bangladesh, ongoing rescue operations aim to evacuate those trapped in flooded homes and provide shelter to the displaced. Further rainfall is expected across eastern Bangladesh, with predictions ranging from 50 mm to 150 mm (2 to 6 inches) over the next three days.
