International Peace Day 2014

Each year 21st September marks International Peace Day. The theme this year is the “Right of Peoples to Peace” which recognizes the 30th United Nations General Assembly Declaration on the Right of Peoples to Peace.

Since 2001, International Peace Day is also an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire.

Muslim Aid fully endorses International Peace Day as a positive step towards a better future for mankind. While the promotion of peace is vital for the full enjoyment of all human rights, Muslim Aid places particular emphasis on the role of peace in tackling the root causes of poverty and suffering around the world. Conflicts create humanitarian crises as well as hostile environments for humanitarian aid workers, and thus countless lives are lost unnecessarily.

Although Muslim Aid’s work is strictly humanitarian, the promotion of peace is integral to its work, and so Muslim Aid often works together with partners to promote peace and unity and to denounce conflict and violence. Most recently, Muslim Aid denounced the fresh wave of violence in Iraq with Catholic NGOs and other Muslim NGOs. Muslim Aid was also part of a multi-faith coalition of faith-based NGOs which delivered emergency relief to displaced families from the Central African Republic in the wake of the conflict which divided communities.

Muslim Aid supports International Peace Day and will always continue to support the promotion of peace for all humankind.
