Muslim Aid Makes Guinness Book of Records' World's Biggest Samosa to Feed the Homeless

This summer Muslim Aid made the world's biggest samosa!

It weighed 153kgs and was verified by a Guinness World Records adjudicator.

The classic Asian snack - but so much bigger - was great fun for staff and volunteers to prepare at the East London Mosque, but our aim was serious. We wanted to demonstrate the generosity of Muslim people during Eid-ul-Adha.

The samosa fed homeless people at the nearby Booth House, Whitechapel Road, which is run by the Salvation Army, the largest hostel of its kind in London. Booth House staff and temporary residents joined in the fun of making the samosa.

Muslim Aid Director of Business Development Zac Hussain said: “Everyone knows and loves a samosa. We wanted to make a larger-than-ever version to demonstrate visually how people of the Muslim faith work tirelessly throughout the year, and particularly during Eids, doing charitable acts to support the unfortunate in the community around them and further afield”.

The initiative achieved its aim of spreading the word about the generous donations made by the British Muslim community for Qurbani, which provided Qurbani meat and other foods to over 300,000 people in countries including Bangladesh, Bosnia, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Somalia and even inside Syria.

The story was covered widely, from CNN TV to the South China Morning Post. Foredul Islam, Muslim Aid’s Senior Fundraising Officer was interviewed on ITV London News, Heart FM and other broadcast programmes. On social media, interest built up as people passed on links to news coverage and it went viral!

The previous holder of the Guinness World Record was held by Bradford College for a samosa which weighed in at 110.8 kg. Sponsors included Sapna Caterers Ltd, Concord Lifting and Elite Caterers & Function Co-ordinators.
