SUDAN

Sudan

9 year old Abdel Kafe from Khartoum was orphaned at the age of 3 when his father died from liver disease.

Since the death of his father, Abdel Kafe, his mother and four siblings have been living in cramped conditions in one small room in their grandfather's house. The heavy rains of last year have left the walls cracked and unstable and unfortunately the family cannot afford to get the room refurbished.

Abdel Kafe is an Asthma patient and requires regular checkups and treatment; before sponsorship his mother could not afford to take her son to the hospital and buy his medication. It was normal for the children to go to school on an empty stomach and not have anything to eat during the school day. Due to Abdel Kafe's poor health and nutrition his attendance at school was very poor.

Since sponsorship started a year ago, the children now have breakfast everyday and Abel Kafe's school attendance has improved and he finds it much easier to concentrate in lessons. His family no longer worry about school fees and Abdel Kafe does not get anxious when he falls ill as he knows that they can pay for his medication.

Abdel Kafe's dream is to become a doctor when he grows up so that he can help children like himself.
