Zakaria Girl's High School is sponsoring two children with Muslim Aid. Sufiyah Patel is the Deputy Head and Head of Religious studies, explains how she came to be involved.
"Whilst teaching an RE lesson about charity work carried out by Muslim charities, one of my Year 11 students, Amna Mohammad, had the idea to undertake a project to help those in need and decided to raise money for the Rainbow Family Programme."
Sufiyah describes that Amna addressed the rest of the school in an assembly to inform them about the Programme and requested donations. The students were inspired to help those who do not have the same opportunities they have or that they often take for granted. There was a fantastic response from the student body; within two days they had raised almost £1,500!
The students now greatly enjoy the sponsorship: "We realise how lucky we are to have all the things we do" explains one student, "and it makes us more aware of the poor and how it is our duty to help them."
Like the students, Sufiyah has found joining the Rainbow Family Programme beneficial as a source of continuous charity for all who have contributed to this worthy cause. She believes that it is our communal responsibility to help all children receive educational opportunities which will benefit them, their families and their communities.
The Rainbow Family Programme is delighted to have the support of Zakaria Girl's High School and welcomes any other schools that are interested in being involved.
