When the river Shabelle burst its banks in Beledweyn town Somalia, the resulting floods devastated peoples lives. Described as the biggest floods in its history an estimated 90% displaced to higher grounds. Living in makeshift shelters or under trees.

Flood waters continue wreaking havoc on the residents in the town, with the regional governor declaring that 425,000 people have been displaced and dispersed across the outskirts of Beledweyn, with others relocating to rural areas (according to Governor’s Pledge dated 11 May 2023).

Thousands of farmlands were destroyed by the raging water while Beledweyn main markets, hospitals, 24 public schools, 54 health facilities, 5 health centres, 6 mobile clinics, 42 community-based facilities, 30 water sources, polices stations, and the houses of the inhabitants have been totally submerged.

Flooding cut off the main roads which could disrupt deliveries of emergency humanitarian supplies to the evacuation sites and have already paralyzed the movement of people and vehicles and the only means of transportation is using tractors which has high associated risk.

People are evacuated to higher grounds which are accessible from outside Beledweyn town. Majority of the displaced communities are displaced towards the Beledweyn airport area, which is an accessible area.
