Eid al-Adha: Significance and Celebration

Eid al-Adha: Significance and Celebration

Eid al-Adha: Significance and Celebration

Eid Al-Adha is the second Eid of the year and has more significance than Eid Al-Fitr. Eid Al-Adha begins after the month of Dhul Hijjah when Muslims go for Hajj. Those who are able perform Hajj and non-pilgrims celebrate with family and friends. Qurbani is also required to do for Eid Al-Adha, where an animal is sacrificed and distributed among family, friends, and the poor. Qurbani can be given at any time of the year, which can be a great way of gaining rewards.

When is Eid Al-Adha 2023?

Eid Al-Adha is expected to fall on 28 June 2023.

Qurbani

Giving Qurbani is an important part of Eid Al-Adha. The word Qurbani derives from ‘Qurb’, which means ‘nearness’. Qurbani must be given on the 10th, 11th, or 12th day of Dhul Hijjah after the Eid prayer. No animal sacrifices can be made before the Eid prayer.

In giving Qurbani, we commemorate the sacrifice that Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was willing to make for the sake of Allah (SWT), sacrificing his son, Ismail (AS). Allah (SWT) swapped Ismail (AS) with a sheep which was slaughtered instead.

The animals that can be slaughtered for Qurbani are:

  • Sheep
  • Goats
  • Cows
  • Buffalo
  • Bulls
  • Camels

All of these animals must be healthy and have reached a certain age.

Aisha (RA) narrated, “There is nothing dearer to Allah during the days of Qurbani than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Judgement with its horns, hair and hooves (to be weighed on a person’s good deeds). The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore, sacrifice with an open and happy heart.” (Tirmidhi)
