WIT empowers Somali, Black heritage, and ethnic minority women and their families in East London with culturally responsive support, helping them overcome social and economic barriers. Under Safia’s leadership, WIT delivers 12 projects focused on education, health, domestic abuse, advice, and food security. She is a champion of community cohesion and women’s empowerment, ensuring women gain the skills and confidence to lead independent lives.
Safia has received numerous recognitions for her work.. She was awarded an MBE for her contribution to community cohesion and making a meaning impactful for women and their families. She received a Purple Plaque for her outstanding service and had DLR train number 62 named in her honour for her work during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also served as Ethnic Minorities Commissioner in Tower Hamlets and has led pioneering projects for women’s empowerment.
With over 20 years of senior leadership experience in the public and voluntary sectors, Safia has worked closely with government departments, the NHS, Met Police, third sector organisations, universities, and private corporations to drive meaningful change for the communities WIT supports.
In addition to her role at WIT, Safia is a Trustee with the Carers Centre, Poplar Union, serves as an Independent Police Advisor, and is part of the Tension Monitoring Group.
