Conflict, political instability, slow and sudden onset disasters, and poor economic conditions contribute to Sudan’s complex crisis, which has left 13.4 million Sudanese in need of humanitarian assistance (4.1 million more than in June 2020). The crisis has generated food insecurity, malnutrition, and a lack of access to basic services, particularly health services and medicines. The complex crisis has led to the internal displacement of 2.5 million Sudanese since 2010, mainly in Darfur, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile states. Sudan also hosts over 1.1 million refugees, including 763,000 refugees from South Sudan and more than 65,000 Ethiopian Refugees, and acts as a key transit country for migrants from the Horn of Africa heading to Europe.

Muslim Aid Country Office in Sudan is currently working in partnership with the World Food Program to address Malnutrition among children as well as Pregnant and Lactating Women in three of the most affected regions in the country.

The Country Office is considered as one of the main partners of UNHCR in addressing the needs of the asylum seekers from Eritrea and Ethiopia in Eastern Sudan, in addition to the support of the Tigray Refugees since the eruption of the Ethiopian conflict in November 2020. Currently Muslim Aid Office in Sudan operates at all the refugee centers in Eastern Sudan, as well as working in all the refugee settlements hosting the Tigray Refugees.

According to Sudan 2022 Humanitarian Need Assessment (OCHA, April 2022), More than 18 million people are likely to face acute food insecurity by September 2022 because of the combined effects of conflict, economic crisis, and poor harvests according to WFP and FAO. That is double the number of people who were food insecure in 2021 as a result of inter-communal clashes, the below-average harvest of the main agricultural season, significantly above-average cereal and non-cereal food prices and continued macroeconomic difficulties. Children and women constitute three-quarters of the affected people and are further exposed to additional protection risks including increased risks of violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
