MdR Sponsored fast challenge

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a time of fasting, reflection, and community. It emphasises gratitude, self-discipline, and generosity. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from all food and drink, including water. Each year Ramadan moves earlier, and this year fasts will be breaking between 5:00pm and 6:00pm. Ramadan in the UK starts on Wednesday, 18 February 2026 and ends with the celebration 'Eid-ul-Fitr (the festival of the breaking of the fast) or “Eid”, on or around Wednesday, 18 March 2026.

One of our core values at MdR is Empowerment, fostering a culture that thrives on diversity and respect for the individual. We also recognise Generosity of Spirit through small, practical actions. Ramadan provides an opportunity to live these values by creating an environment where colleagues feel supported to observe their faith in a way that works for them.

Ramadan Sponsored Fast: How to take part

We invite colleagues to participate in or sponsor our upcoming Ramadan Sponsored Fast on 11 March 2026. You can take part in the sponsored fast in a way that suits you best, or support colleagues by donating to our chosen charity, Muslim Aid's initiative – Feed the fasting: providing meals to the poor and needy during Ramadan.

Fasting means no food or drink for a set period of time. If you choose to fast, we recommend starting the day with a nutritious breakfast and staying well hydrated beforehand. Light exercise is fine, but strenuous activity should be avoided.

For a fuller experience, colleagues may choose to fast from 8:00am to 6.00pm (shorted for this event).

Alternatively, you can:

  • Fast for a shorter duration
  • Take part in a water-only fast

Participation is flexible. Sponsorship is open throughout Ramadan, so if you are unable to fast on Wednesday 11 March, you may choose another day or take part across the month.

On Wednesday 11 March 2026, we will be hosting our annual internal Iftar, where colleagues are invited to come together to break the fast at sunset. Attendance is open to all colleagues, including those who are not fasting.

Why take part in the sponsored fast?

Participation is open to all colleagues, regardless of faith. From a wellbeing perspective, fasting can:

  • Encourage mindfulness and self-reflection
  • Support self-discipline and focus
  • Increase gratitude and awareness of daily habits
  • Foster empathy and connection with colleagues

Colleagues are encouraged to participate in a way that feels manageable and inclusive.
