Somalia Drought Emergency - 'The unforgotten emergency'

This is Zakat Eligible project.

After three consecutive years of almost no rain, the East African country of Somalia is in the grips of its worst drought in more than 40 years.  (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/somalia-brink-famine-224945352.html)

Somalia’s drought emergency has intensified, with the number of people affected increasing to about 4.5 million people, up from 3.2 million in December 2021; and this number is steadily rising(UNOCHA, Feb 2022). About 671,000 people have been displaced internally in search of water, food, livelihoods, and pasture. The displacement trend indicates higher numbers than during the 2016/17drought emergency. According to the Protection and Return Monitoring Network, about 259,500 people were displaced between October 2016 and February 2017, compared to 572,700 people is placed between October 2021 and February 2022. Reports from Baardheere, Gedo region, Jubal and State, inform of deaths of children and adults from causes related to drought. Pastoralists have reported significant loss of livestock, a main source of livelihoods in the country.

Baardheere District is one of the six districts in Gedo region which has been adversely affected by the ongoing drought. Baardhere is one of the hard to reach districts and the town is accessible only by air.

Muslim Aid (MA) presence has been significant contributor to the humanitarian assistance in Baardhere as MA has been implementing health programme since 2010 in the intervention of TB programme.  This programme has brought impact in the reduction of TB cases, especially in the crowded IDP settlements.  Though life saving interventions, the community has continued recognising MA's efforts and supported fully in the implementation of the drought project to support with Food Packs and NFIs (non food items).

Muslim Aid has commenced its second phase for the drought response project providing food packs and vital non food items to families in new displacement camps (people have travelled from the countryside due to food shortages) and host communities.  The team is on the ground in Baardhere and have shared there own photos from the field.  There are very few organisations responding in this area and the government is non-existent.  Muslim Aid's support here is vital but far from enough.
