The Month of Jamada Al-Thani

Meaning of Jumada Al-Thani: The second month of summer.

The Month of Jamada Al-Thani

The Month of Jamada Al-Thani

Jamada Al-Thani is the sixth month in the Islamic calendar. It is often called ‘Jumada Al-Aakhira', which translates to ‘the end of the dry season’. This is because this month was traditionally a time when the land was dry due to the hot weather.

The Islamic calendar has 12 months; Muharram, Safar, Rabi Al-Awwal, Rabi Al-Thani, Jamada Al-Awwal, Jamada Al-Thani, Rajab, Sha’ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qa’dah ad Dhul Hijjah. Each has its own significance, and four are sacred. However, the other months are also special and mark key dates and events, including Jamada Al-Thani.

When is Jamada Al-Thani?

Jamada Al-Thani will begin on 14 December and end on 22 January 2023. This may slightly change based on the sighting of the moon.

Important Events in Jamada Al-Thani

The Prophet’s (PBUH) youngest daughter, Fatima (RA), was born on the 20th of Jamada Al-Thani in Makkah, making this a special date. She is an important female in Islamic history who was of the first people to accept Islam and had a close bond with her father.

Fatima (RA) also passed away during this month, which was just two months after the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) died. The cause of her death has two explanations: Sunni Muslims believe that her death was due to the grief of the Prophet’s (PBUH) death, whereas Shia Muslims believe that Fatima (RA) died from injuries that she got when her house was raided, by the order of Abu Bakr (RA) after she refused to accept his leadership and said her husband, Ali (RA) should be the leader.

Abu Bakr also passed away during Jamada Al-Thani, on the 22nd day. He was the first caliph and became the Prophet's (PBUH) father-in-law after Aisha (RA) married the Prophet (PBUH). He passed away in 634 AD and was buried in Madina, next to the Prophet (PBUH).

What To Do in Jamada Al-Thani

During Jamada Al-Thani, try to worship Allah (SWT) in different ways, such as praying sunnah prayers, fasting, and giving to charity. The Prophet, upon him, be peace, said: “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

Donate to Muslim Aid this Jamada Al-Thani to support those in need around the world and follow the sunnah of giving all year round.
