Meaning of Shawwal: To lift or carry.

Shawwal

Shawwal

Shawwal is the 10th month in the Islamic calendar and marks many significant events. Shawwal translates to ‘raised’ and this refers to the time in which it was typical for camels to become pregnant and raise their young. The month of Shawwal begins with Eid Al-Fitr, making it a celebratory time.

When is Shawwal 2023?

Shawwal is expected to commence on 21 April and end on 20 May 2023. The first day of Shawwal will be the day of Eid Al-Fitr.

Important Events During This Month

On the third day of Shawwal, the Battle of Uhud commenced. This took place on the Mount of Uhud, and the Makkans wanted to kill the Prophet (PBUH). This battle was the only one that the Muslims lost and was a result of the archers leaving their positions before they were told to, which left the Prophet (PBUH) badly injured. However, the Prophet (PBUH) was not angry with the archers, for he knew it was a mistake.

Fasting in the Month of Shawwal

It is recommended and encouraged to fast for six days in Shawwal. These fasts do not have to be on consecutive days but also cannot be on the first day of Shawwal since it is Eid. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime.” (Muslim)

Acts of Worship in Shawwal

During Shawwal, it is important to maintain acts of worship and increase them if possible. This is in line with the Sunnah, as the Prophet (PBUH) would increase and maintain worship during all times of the year, not only in the four sacred months.

To make the most of Shawwal, you could try to read more Qur’an, pray Nafl prayers, visit the sick, or give charity.Prophet Muhammad, upon him, be peace, said, “Protect yourself from hell-fire even by giving a piece of date as charity.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
