The Sacred Month of Muharram: Reflection and Renewal

The Sacred Month of Muharram: Reflection and Renewal

The Sacred Month of Muharram: Reflection and Renewal

What is the Meaning of Muharram?

Muharram is the first of the 12 months in the Islamic calendar and marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. The term ‘Muharram’ and the Ka’bah (Al Masjid Al Haram) both derive from the Arabic root word ‘haram,’ meaning ‘forbidden.’ This name signifies that fighting is prohibited during this sacred month, ensuring Muslims can safely travel to and from Hajj.

When is Muharram 2025?

The month of Muharram is expected to begin on 27th June 2025 in the UK. This date may vary depending on the moon's sighting. Please contact your local mosque council for further guidance on date accuracy.

Why is Muharram Important?

Muharram is one of the four sacred months, the others being Rajab, Dhul-Qa’dah, and Dhul-Hijjah. During these months, rewards are multiplied, but so are punishments for sins, which is why it is so important to stop sinning and instead increase worship. Muharram is particularly important, as it can be a means of starting up good habits for the rest of the year to come.

Another notable event that took place during the month of Muharram is The Day of Ashura. The Day of Ashura marks the sacrifice of Imam Husayn (RA) at The Battle of Karbala and the victorious escape of Prophet Musa (AS) from Fir 'Aun’s ill-treatment, splitting the Red Sea.

Fasting On the Day of Ashura

These events took place on the 10th of Muharram. Although it is not obligatory, it is highly recommended to fast on this day. Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) suggested fasting on the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th of Muharram to distinguish the Ummah from the Jewish practice.

What Should We Do in Muharram?

Fasting during Muharram can be highly rewarding and a good way to start increasing acts of worship to continue throughout the year. This Muharram 2025, try to increase acts of worship like helping neighbours, feeding people experiencing poverty, smiling, and giving charity to reap the rewards of this sacred month.
