Charity in Ramadan

In Ramadan - the ninth month of the Islamic calendar – giving charity holds a lot of rewards. Being generous and giving to others is a very important aspect of Islam, and this is shown by Zakat being a Pillar of Islam.

The Prophet, upon him, be peace, said: “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

Charity in Ramadan

Rewards of Giving in Ramadan

There are many benefits of giving in Ramadan, both in this life and the hereafter.

A Muslim can invest in their afterlife by giving charity. There are eight gates of Jannah that a believer can enter through:

  1. Baab As Salaat – for Muslims who were punctual and focused on prayer.
  2. Baab Al Jihad – for Muslims who took part in Jihad (died for Islam).
  3. Baab As Sadaqah – for Muslims who regularly gave to charity.
  4. Baab Ar Rayyan – for Muslims who fasted.
  5. Baab Al Hajj – for Muslims who did Hajj.
  6. Baab Al Kaazimeen Al Ghaiz Wal Aafina Anin Naas – for those who controlled their anger and were forgiving.
  7. Baab Al Iman – for Muslims who had true faith.
  8. Baab Al Dhikr – for Muslims who remembered Allah (SWT).

Baab As Sadaqah will be the gate of Jannah that those who give charity regularly and willingly will enter from.

There are also several hadiths that show the importance of charity:

Prophet Muhammad, upon him, be peace, said, “Protect yourself from hellfire even by giving a piece of date as charity.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Muhammad, upon him, be peace, said: “Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives, Allah adds to his respect; and the one who shows humility, Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).” (Muslim)

The Prophet, upon him, be peace, said: “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

There are also special nights in Ramadan that hold more rewards, so giving charity on these nights is recommended. Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Power, falls on one of the last 10 odd nights of Ramadan. Be sure to donate to charity on these nights to guarantee the rewards of this blessed night.

Allah (SWT) says in the Qur'an, “The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” (Qur'an, 97:3)
