How Can Itikaf Improve Your Spirituality in Islam?

One of the most spiritual awakening acts within Islam is the enriching act of Itikaf, a period of seclusion from the worldly life to be observed during Ramadan, allowing Muslims to retract from distractions of this Dunya (life) and reconnect with their Lord, their Creator.

What is Itikaf?

The word Itikaf comes from the Arabic language which means ‘to isolate’ or ‘be devoted’ to something. In practice, Itikaf offers the rare chance to hit pause on day-to-day life, removing yourself from worldly desires to seek closeness to Allah through worship, reflection, and remembrance of Allah (dhikr).

The importance of Itikaf

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) used to observe Itikaf regularly during the last ten days of Ramadan, seeking Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power). Performing Itikaf is a spiritual journey that allows Muslims to step away from worldly concerns and fully immerse themselves in the remembrance of Allah.

It has been narrated that the Prophet (SAW)used to perform i'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan until Allah the Mighty & Majestic, took him." [Bukhari & Muslim]

The significance of the last ten days of Ramadan

Ramadan is a time to reflect and renew your spiritual self. The last ten days of Ramadan play a vital role in seeking the closeness of Allah, as one of the nights within those ten days entail the night of Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Power. Laylatul Qadr holds a significance over any other night as it has been described by Allah (SWT) as being better than a thousand months.

"We have indeed revealed this in the 'Night of Power'. And what will explain to you what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah's permission, on every errand. Peace! This until the rise of Morn!" [Quran 97:1-5]

What are the benefits of Itikaf?

There are a vast number of Itikaf benefits when observed. Itikaf not only gives you a chance to follow the Sunnah but also provides time for self-reflection and encourages acts of repentance. Essentially, the core purpose of Itikaf is to pause everyday distractions and strengthen your Iman (faith), earning reward for every moment spent in the remembrance of Allah.

Below are some of the boundless ways in which Itikaf can improve your spirituality in Islam.

Deep Connection with Allah

In the calmness of Itikaf, you have the perfect opportunity to deepen your connection with Allah, through uninterrupted time for prayer and dedicated time for reciting the Quran, ideally renewing the relationship with your Creator.

Closeness to Allah

One of the best ways in which you can get closer to Allah is through extra worship. Itikaf is not a mandatory act but is a form of extra devotion to Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) narrated that Allah (SWT) said “My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him…” [Bukhari]. We learn from this hadith that we can only become closer to Allah by following the Fardh (obligatory actions), followed by extra actions. Since Itikaf become an extended act of virtuous worship, it is a great step to getting closer to Allah.

Cleansing of the Heart and Soul

Verily, in the Remembrance of Allah do the hearts find peace. [Quran 13:28]. Itikaf creates the most perfect environment for Taqwa (the God-consciousness of Allah), and teaches you self-discipline, giving you the chance to squash your ego and listen to your soul. In the end, a spiritual heart will allow you to break away from heedlessness and long to be closer to Allah.

Increased Focus in Worship

Itikaf gives you the opportunity to seclude and concentrate on your Salah, and Dhikr (remembrance of Allah). The absence to the interruptions of daily life lets you focus on your devotion to Allah like never before,

Seeking Laylatul Qadr

Being in Itikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan increases your chances of obtaining the blessed night of Laylatul Qadr in dedicated devotion.

Reflection on Oneself and Gaining Spiritual Clarity

Itikaf gives you a chance to reconstruct your goals and intentions. It’s a time to question your way of life and whether it pleases Allah. It’s a space where you get to reflect on your life direction and focus on change. The clarity you can gain through this type of reflection can also lead to personal growth, giving you a clearer sense of purpose.

The Spiritual Rewards of Itikaf

The rewards of Itikaf in Islam go beyond the last ten days of Ramadan as you find yourself leaving with a soft heart by the end of it. You’ll have discovered and developed new habits of worship that can last beyond the month of Ramadan, continuing the yearning to be close to Allah. You may also emerge with a lot more patience and gratitude, leaving you with the spiritual recharge your soul longed for.

Your sins are also said to have been forgiven through sincere repentance in Itikaf, and your rewards multiplied through worship. The Prophet (SAW) has said: “(Whoever performs Itikaf) He is safe from sin, and he also gets that reward which everyone (outside of Iikaf) gets for pious deeds.” [Ibn Majah]

If you ever find yourself distant from the closeness of Allah and overwhelmed by the distractions of this Dunya then Itikaf may be your refuge.
