Myanmar Earthquake: aid work survivors mobilise to feed the hungry

In response to the post-earthquake emergency engulfing Myanmar, Muslim Aid’s colleagues and partners in Myanmar are co-ordinating in preparation to distribute food assistance.

A powerful 7.7 magnitude quake struck the central region near the city of Sagaing on March 28th, reverberating at a depth of 10km.

Our colleagues have shared that a local airport has been damaged and a hospital collapsed, with the old Sagaing (Innwa) Bridge linking the two most severely impacted areas also severed following the shockwaves.

Strong tremors were felt hundreds of miles away in Thailand and south-west China.

In the initial hours following the earthquake more than 144 deaths were confirmed, with the number of fatalities increasing beyond 1,000 on March 29th.

Khalid Javid, CEO of Muslim Aid, said:

“Muslim Aid has established that our colleagues are safe and they are already mobilising to support the victims of the earthquake, with the 1.5 million population of the impacted region already enduring food supply shortages amid extensive recent flooding.

Food insecurity in Myanmar has reached unprecedented levels amid the worst humanitarian crisis in its recent history, with millions impacted across the south east Asian nation.

April marks monsoon season, making emergency support all the more urgent.”

Most displaced people are cut off from access to food and often dependent on food assistance for survival.

Food is the biggest need for displaced people but spiralling costs and rapid inflation have made it unaffordable for many. The cost of basic staples – including rice, beans, oil and salt – has increased by 30 percent in the past year.
