Flash flooding in Afghanistan has killed more than 300 people, with sudden high waters wiping away communities in an instant. Over 1600 are missing or injured. Thousands of homes have been destroyed and a state of emergency declared.
On Saturday 11th May 2024, unusually heavy seasonal rains struck the northern areas of Baghlan, Takhar and Badakhshan. Sudden flash flooding swept through remote but highly populated areas.
Thousands of people have been left without shelter, electricity or infrastructure as major flooding has claimed lives and left the area submerged and uninhabitable. Homes, crops, cattle and mosques have been swept away in a torrent of deadly water that has left only destruction.
Transport links have been disrupted as people search for their families amidst the chaos and panic. More than 300 people have died with the death toll expected to rise.
This is an emergency appeal
The people of Afghanistan are desperate for your help. The major earthquakes of the last 12 months plus widespread poverty and food crisis mean that the flooding has now led to catastrophic conditions. There are immediate needs to reach those stranded and injured to provide food, water, shelter and sanitation.
Muslim Aid has been delivering aid in Afghanistan for over 20 years, supporting people in humanitarian crisis. Our teams responded immediately, working with local partners to assess urgent needs and provide emergency rescue and response.
Time is crucial as we respond to those trapped in the flooded areas. Your support can help us to provide food and emergency shelter packs, including tents, to protect the most vulnerable.
Please donate now for the people of Afghanistan.
